More than 5,000 residents of Homa Bay County received free medical services during a comprehensive health camp held at Onundo Stadium in Mbita. The health outreach was part of the ongoing Devolution Sensitization Week activities aimed at engaging communities and enhancing service delivery awareness.
The event brought together key partners in the health sector, including the Safaricom Foundation, which announced a one-year support program for 40 elderly residents in the county. Through the Social Health Authority (SHA) program, the selected beneficiaries will receive free medical care, an initiative designed to improve access to essential health services for vulnerable populations.
Safaricom Foundation’s intervention aligns with broader efforts to promote equitable healthcare, especially among undeserved communities. The program will contribute to reducing the health burden among the elderly and promote dignity in care.
Council of Governors Chief Executive Officer Mary Mwiti lauded the initiative, describing it as a model for impactful community outreach. She emphasized the importance of such partnerships in bridging gaps in healthcare access while also applauding Homa Bay County for its preparedness to host the upcoming Devolution Conference.
“This health camp exemplifies the spirit of devolution by bringing services directly to the people and ensuring no one is left behind,” she noted.
Homa Bay County Executive Committee Member for Health, Mercy Osewe, reiterated the county government’s dedication to expanding healthcare coverage. She highlighted the importance of sustained partnerships and community-based initiatives in achieving long-term improvements in public health.
“We are committed to fostering collaborations that strengthen our health systems and improve the well-being of our people. This camp is a testament to what we can achieve through joint efforts,” Osewe said.
The Devolution Sensitization Week serves as a build-up to the national Devolution Conference, scheduled to take place in Homa Bay next month, where stakeholders will assess progress and chart the way forward for devolved governance and service delivery.
